Bicycle Build Program Aims to Support Character, Values for Locked Up Youth

A new program launched this August at the St. Johns Youth Academy. Local not for profits VeloFest Community Initiative and Compassion St. Augustine, teamed up with Sequal Youth and Family Services to pilot “Box to Bike, building character, purpose, value and bike love one bike at a time.”

“The impact this program has is already profound to me personally,” said VeloFest President and Founder Heather Neville. “For years we have been trying to find a perfect fit to meet the needs of our community, now we get the opportunity to also help individuals through bicycles.”

Box to Bike aims to achieve multiple objectives through community partnerships and technical skill curriculum. The 12-part program provides up to 7 students at a time guided technical education regarding bicycle maintenance, road safety and history/rules related to bicycle transit and lifestyle. Building a bicycle from its components to a mechanical marvel, Box to Bike aims to build character and value for boys ages 14 to 17 years old. The program is facilitated by Sequel staff, a contracted bicycle mechanic, and veloteers from VeloFest Community Initiative and Compassion St. Augustine. The program is supported by charitable contributions from community partners such as Road Bike Outlet, VRUM Planning and fundraisers like “Bikes, Brews & Cruise Brewery Tour.” This pilot program will run from June 2017 until May 2018.
